I have a younger brother who is more than 10 years younger than me, and I know I'm not the only one who has siblings with a large age gap. It can be a beautiful experience, but it can also be challenging. Many people struggle because they end up acting more like parents than siblings. This is called parentification, which is when older siblings take on parental roles.
When we're in that situation, younger siblings often have more respect for us because when they get in trouble, parents might say, "I'm going to tell your sister/brother." I can honestly say I heard that a lot growing up in my own home. I try to see it as respect rather than fear. Even though I sometimes have to correct my brother or get onto him, we also play together, spend time together, and laugh a lot. Because of that, I don't feel bad about it.
What isn't always fair, though, is that some parents become so used to having an older sibling around that they start expecting them to take care of the younger children or be responsible for them as if they were another parent, when that shouldn't be the case. Depending on the situation, that can become very overwhelming.
Sometimes it's important to remind parents that I am still a child too, and that they need to give attention, guidance, and care not only to the younger siblings but also to us, the older ones.
